The Manor of Rickmansworth, was originally said to be granted to the Abbey of St. Albans by Offa (757-96) and was confirmed to the Abbey and convent by King John. In 1278 it was considered that Rickmansworth was ancient demesne of the Crown and had been from time immemorial and in possession of the abbotts of St. Albans before the Conquest of England.
